Figures from July show that Istanbul handled 8.15 million passengers, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. While Heathrow experienced a 1.5% drop in passenger numbers compared to the same period last year, Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase. The decline at Heathrow has been partially attributed to disruptions related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
This development adds urgency to discussions surrounding Heathrow’s proposed expansion. The airport, currently operating at near full capacity with its two runways, has long advocated for a third runway. The proposed £33 billion expansion aims to boost the airport’s annual passenger capacity to around 150 million, enhancing the UK’s international connectivity, trade, and tourism. The latest passenger figures have intensified calls for government approval of the project.
Istanbul Airport’s rise is supported by its relatively recent establishment in 2018. The airport boasts a larger site and the advantage of 24-hour operations. It currently operates three runways, with a fourth expected to become operational by the end of 2026, further enhancing its capacity and efficiency. This robust infrastructure has positioned Istanbul Airport as a formidable competitor in the European aviation market.
Meanwhile, other UK airports are also witnessing growth. London Stansted and Manchester airports reported their busiest July ever, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively. This trend reflects the broader dynamics in the aviation sector as airports strive to accommodate increasing passenger demand amidst evolving global challenges.
